Fitness Test Requirements for West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service uses the National Firefighter Selection Tests — the standardised physical assessment used by most UK fire services. The tests are designed to ensure candidates have the aerobic capacity and physical ability required for operational firefighting in full PPE.

The minimum standard for the bleep test at West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service is level 8.8. The aerobic fitness test used is the Chester treadmill test. All tests must be passed on the first attempt on the day of assessment.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service uses the standard National Firefighter Selection Tests with a minimum bleep test standard of 8.8. Recruitment campaigns open periodically — check the WYFRS website for current vacancies.

The National Firefighter Physical Tests

All candidates must complete the following tests in a single assessment session:

Physical Tests Required

  • Bleep Test / Chester Treadmill: Minimum level 8.8 — aerobic fitness assessment
  • Equipment Carry: Carry fire service equipment over 25 metres in PPE within the time limit
  • Dummy Drag: Drag a 55kg casualty dummy over 30 metres
  • Ladder Climb: Ascend a 13.5m ladder, perform a leg lock, remove hands
  • Confined Space: Navigate a tunnel in darkness wearing full PPE

How To Prepare For The WYFRS Fitness Test

The bleep test and Chester treadmill test both measure aerobic capacity (VO2 max). The most effective preparation combines Zone 2 aerobic running 2–3 times per week with interval training once per week, supplemented by bleep test or Chester-specific practice sessions.

For the equipment carry and dummy drag, grip strength training is essential — most candidates are limited by grip, not aerobic fitness. Farmer carries and dead hangs 3 times per week from at least 6 weeks out.

Important

Train to exceed the minimum standard — not to meet it. Nerves, conditions, and test-day variability mean candidates who train to exactly 8.8 often fail by a narrow margin. Target at least half a level above the minimum.
